Sighting 3.07.: A group of Blainville’s beaked whales very close to the boat

3rd of July 2016: Today we got to see something very special, that even our captain has not seen in so many years on the Tina boat. A very rare sighting of a group of 5 Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) swimming besides the boat.

The beaked whales are normally extremely shy and if we are lucky enough to spot them, then they are usually quite far away and only a short time at the water surface.

Today however, the Blainville’s beaked whales, also called dense-beaked whale, were quite interested and swam for a while alongside the boat. Even our captain Jesus Manuel was over the moon with excitement.

Other sightings were Atlantic spotted dolphins, Pilot whales, a Loggerhead sea turtle and two Ospreys.
